Biography
I was born (1962) and grew up in the beautiful nature of south-west Drenthe. My parents often took me out into nature. They passed on the love for nature to me. Of course the camera went with me and the passion for nature and landscape photography was born, a form of photography that would never let go of me. Although my photographic roots lie in landscape photography, I now work full-time as a professional photographer in the field of business portrait photography, corporate photography, architecture and interior photography (see my other website janduker.nl). In addition to my work as a commercial photographer, however, landscape photography has always continued to attract and I have always continued to develop myself in this area. This website “Landscapes as Art” is therefore completely devoted to my landscape photography.
Ik werd geboren (1962) en groeide op in de mooie natuur van zuid-west Drenthe. Mijn ouders namen mij vaak mee de natuur in. Zij brachten de liefde voor natuur op mij over. Uiteraard ging dan de camera ook mee en de passie voor natuur- en landschapsfotografie was geboren, een vorm van fotografie die mij niet meer zou loslaten. Hoewel mijn fotografische roots In de landschapsfotografie liggen, ben ik tegenwoordig full-time werkzaam als professioneel fotograaf op het gebied van zakelijke portretfotografie, bedrijfsfotografie, architectuur- en interieurfotografie (zie mijn andere website janduker.nl). Naast mijn werk als commercieel fotograaf bleef de landschapsfotografie echter altijd trekken en ben ik mij hierin ook altijd blijven ontwikkelen. Deze website “Landscapes as Art” staat daarom volledig in het teken van mijn landschapsfotografie.
Artist statement
In my creative vision I try to keep my photography as simple as possible. The use of filters and long exposures lead to minimalist compositions that reflect my vision and interpretation of a particular location. Often this is not a representation of how I look at a subject, but how a subject feels to me. In my style of photography I try to convey a sense of serenity, tranquility, timelessness and simplicity to the viewer.
For me, photography is essentially about connecting with your subject but also about wanting to share your work with others. The way I represent a subject is my interpretation. My intention is that the photo appeals to the viewer’s imagination and evokes his or her own memories or feelings. My wish is that the viewer also feels connected to my fine-art photography.
In mijn creatieve visie probeer ik mijn fotografie zo simpel mogelijk te houden. Het gebruik van filters en lange belichtingstijden leiden tot minimalistische composities die mijn visie en interpretatie van een bepaalde locatie weergeven. Veelal is dit niet een weergave van hoe ik naar een onderwerp kijk, maar hoe voor mij een onderwerp voelt. In mijn stijl van fotograferen probeer ik een gevoel van sereniteit, rust, tijdloosheid en eenvoud over te brengen op de kijker.
Voor mij gaat fotografie in essentie over verbinding met je onderwerp maar ook om je werk met anderen te willen delen. De manier waarop ik een onderwerp weergeef, is mijn interpretatie. Mijn intentie is dat de foto tot de verbeelding spreekt bij de kijker en bij hem of haar eigen herinneringen of gevoelens oproept. Mijn wens is dat de kijker zich daardoor ook verbonden voelt met mijn fine-art fotografie.
Digital technology
And although it is often stated that the technique is of minor importance, I notice that digital photography gives me many opportunities to experiment and to communicate my vision to the viewer. Nothing, of course, replaces real “seeing” and being touched by a subject. But the use of filters and the possibilities of post-processing in Photoshop give me the opportunity to make a subject come to life.
En hoewel er vaak gesteld wordt dat de techniek van ondergeschikt belang is, merk ik dat digitale fotografie mij veel mogelijkheden geeft om te experimenteren en mijn visie over te brengen op de kijker. Niets vervangt natuurlijk het echte ”zien” van en geraakt worden door een onderwerp. Maar het gebruik van filters en de mogelijkheden van nabewerking in Photoshop geven mij de mogelijkheid om een onderwerp meer tot leven te laten komen.
The print
For me, a print is the ultimate end product of a photo. The viewer gets the feeling that you can hear the wind, touch the water or sand and smell the air. And that you can, as it were, step into the image and walk around in it. If a print can evoke that feeling, a photo is really successful for me.
Een print is voor mij het ultieme eindproduct van een foto. De kijker krijgt het gevoel dat je de wind kunt horen, het water of het zand kunt aanraken en de lucht kunt ruiken. En dat je als het ware in het beeld kunt stappen en er in rond kunt wandelen. Als een print dat gevoel kan oproepen, is een foto voor mij echt geslaagd.
